Basic Schedule

Nairobi

You will arrive in the capital city of Nairobi in the late evening from the US. The next morning, we will visit Sheldricks Elephant Orphanage followed by a chance to feed endangered Rothschild giraffes at the Giraffe Center. As time allows, we might also experience a historic museum to get a sense of the time-period in which Jung was in Kenya.

echoes of eden, naivasha

We will then drive out of Nairobi to Echoes of Eden Retreat Center, catching breathtaking views down into the Great Rift Valley. The following day we will explore Lake Naivasha, the only fresh water lake in the Rift Valley. Boat rides on the lake give us the chance to experience the exotic bird life as well as hippopotami in the water! A walking safari on Crescent Island is a favorite, where Out of Africa was filmed. (You might wish to watch this 1985 film with Merrill Streep and Robert Redford before you come!) That evening, we will enjoy dinner on the Retreat veranda. There will also be opportunity to learn about Eden Thriving’s environmental work in local communities and to plant a tree with school children.

SAFARI

We will drive to our safari location within one of Kenya’s great wildlife ecosystems. There we will be met by our local drivers and guides. Their knowledge of the terrain and the animal habitat will make our experience wonderfully rich and exciting such as we experience close encounters with elephants, giraffes, a variety of antelopes, cape buffalos, zebras, lions, cheetahs, ostriches, hyenas, warthogs, wildebeests, impalas and much more. Our early morning safaris will be followed by a hearty breakfast. Rest is recommended during the heat of the day. Our evening safari drives conclude with ‘sundowners’ and ‘bitings’ surrounded by wildlife as the sun sets, before we settle into a lovely evening meal and hot showers. Our safari will also offer us a cultural experience with local tribal warriors, who are our hosts.

Mombasa

Following our time on safari, we will fly to the famous port city of Mombasa on the Indian Ocean where Jung first set foot on Kenyan soil. Mombasa’s beautiful beaches are world renowned, as is their Swahili culture and cuisine. We will explore Old Mombasa Town, which continues to reflect some of what Jung experienced. We will also tour the Portuguese Fort Jesus, built in the 16th century.

From Mombasa, we will take the train to Nairobi soaking in the Kenyan countryside as Jung may have first experienced it. In Nairobi, we will settle into the one of Kenya’s historic Jung-era hotels. Nairobi offers many cultural opportunities to which you will be escorted. You may wish to experience music and dancing in Nairobi or visit the National Museum or the Railroad Museum to see the era of trains that carried Jung to Nairobi. For our last day before our late evening departures back home, you can choose to shop for African treasures, have a body talk and/or massage session before being delivered to your airline.

Hosts

During your stay in Kenya, Miriam Smith, a long-time resident of Africa, will be your knowledgeable host, sharing her retreat center, providing insights into Kenya, and connecting you with local cultural guides. She holds a profound respect for the sacred land. Jeanne Schul will lead body therapy movement classes to maintain physical health and guide dream groups to explore our dreams and synchronicities. Inspired by Jung, we’ll delve into how our time in Africa shapes our personal myth and influences our psyches, bodies, and souls. Miriam and Jeanne will also offer spiritual practices to enhance your soulful pilgrimage experience.
